Double Loop takes its name from double-loop learning,
a concept in organisational development based on the ability to challenge
and rethink the assumptions, routines, standards and decisions within an
organisation. Put simply, double-loop learning is what individuals and organisations
need to do if they are really to improve their own and their organisation's
success rather than just finding a more efficient way of achieving the same
performance.
Single-loop learning and double-loop learning were developed as distinct
concepts by US researchers Chris Argyris and Donald Schön. They saw
learning as a process of detecting and correcting errors so that when
a chosen action fails to achieve a desired outcome, most people look for
another action which will achieve that same outcome. The commonly used
example of single-loop learning is the thermostat. If a room thermostat
is set at 20 degrees, it switches the heating on and off as required to
maintain the temerature at the set level. This is single-loop learning.
But, if the thermostat were capable of questioning what temperature was
most appropriate, for example by assessing how people in the room were
dressed, and then set a new temperature accordingly, that would be double-loop
learning.
The diagram below shows how it works.

Single-loop and double-loop learning can also
be applied to individuals and organisations. When goals, values or strategies
are taken for granted (single-loop learning) improvements in performance
tend to be small because changes are aimed at making the existing strategy
more efficient. In contrast, by adopting double-loop learning, the underlying
assumptions of the strategy are questioned and if necessary a new strategy
can be adopted. Double-loop learning is especially important for making
sound decisions during periods of rapid change when things are uncertain,
an environment that most companies and organisations commonly face. At
Double Loop, we believe that effective team working, sound management
and good leadership depend on continually questioning underlying assumptions
about the values and strategies you adopt, changing the actions you take
as a consequence and evaluating the results. The outcome you achieve then
starts a new process of challenging existing routines or decisions and
so on in a continuous loop.
Double Loop's team of experienced consultants can help companies and
individuals re-evaluate their usual routines, strategies and values in
order to improve the performance of team members, managers or leaders.
